Counselling does not only happen during the hour you meet. New awareness may continue to unfold afterward—in conversations, choices, body sensations and moments when an old pattern becomes visible.
Between-session practice should not feel like a test of being a “good client.” It is an invitation to notice and experiment within your actual capacity.
Keep the practice small
A useful practice can take less than five minutes. You might write down one situation you want to discuss, notice when a familiar feeling appears, or try one sentence for a boundary. Small observations are often easier to learn from than ambitious plans that add pressure.
Five possibilities
- Capture a moment: Note what happened, what you felt, what you assumed and what you did next.
- Notice exceptions: When was the problem slightly less intense? What was different?
- Practise language: Rehearse a request or boundary privately before using it with someone else.
- Support regulation: Choose a sensory or grounding practice that your counsellor has discussed with you and that feels safe.
- Bring questions back: Confusion, resistance and lack of progress are useful material—not evidence of failure.
A simple note
Situation → feeling → meaning → response → what I might need.
One honest line in each category is enough.

Respect privacy and safety
Journals, shared devices and therapy materials may not be private in every home or relationship. Choose a method that fits your circumstances. Do not use exposure, trauma-processing or high-conflict conversation exercises without discussing suitability and safety with your counsellor.
If something feels worse
Contact your counsellor or another appropriate professional if a practice creates significant distress. If you are thinking about suicide or need immediate support in Canada, call or text 988. Call 911 if there is immediate danger.
